Safety Alert! Please Be Aware During Drop-offs and Pickups

Families,

Several reports have come in about some unsafe behavior on Orange Grove, and on La Zorrela (near the church parking lot).

Leave early to get to school
Rushing causes us all to make worse decisions. Make sure you have enough time to glide into the parking lot in a relaxed manner, and keep it slow. Students should arrive before 7:25 to make sure they have enough time to get to class.

Wait in line with your fellow parents
We have a few reports of drivers jumping the line or driving into the turning lane to bypass other drivers. Please just wait.

If you drop off in the church parking lot, make sure your child walks all the way to Orange Grove before crossing La Zorrela. Cutting diagonally across La Zorrela exposes your child to more risk.

In our lot, do not pick up from the middle lane.
Pick up only from the curb - or park in the lot. Middle-lane pickups are dangerous.

Thank you all for your help to keep this daily event calmer and safer.

"Pics" of the Week

Snapshots of life and learning at OGMS

Back to School!

We're back! After a well-deserved break, a new year and new quarter offered a fresh start - and winter, Arizona-style. A soggy Wednesday moved lunch indoors. Students on the back patio saw Rio Robles flow and got an impromptu lesson on drainage. Friday started with temperatures in the 30s but warmed up nicely. New units in classrooms across campus kicked into high gear.

Do the Math! Now, Teach Your Robot

Ms. Cordero-Muir's students are learning how to evaluate algebraic expressions by substituting a given value for the variable. Then they got a lesson on how to program Google sheets to do the math. There were a few groans of frustration, but then came the magic words: "Oh, I see what did wrong." One student commented, "I'm so proud of myself!"
Ms. Cordero-Muir (in background) offers pointers to a student as the class works on using substitution to evaluate algebraic expressions.

More Problem Solving

Rain drove a lot of students inside, but some can't get enough of it. These boys found a way to combine shelter with the elements.
Two boys share an umbrella in a creative way.

The challenge: Depict a sea creature without using "contour lines" - the outline that often defines a shape. Instead, Ms. Conte's sixth-graders used various marking techniques taught in class to suggest edges without explicit lines. Focusing on light, tone and texture rather than line can give the finished drawing an open, airy appearance.

Works below are by Aloha Fraser, Sophie Guarrera, Yates Hackett, Aleksander Ivanitski, Alix Duemmel, Scarlett Rivera, My Nguyen, Sophia Swanson, Elena Bengston, Taylor Rea, Zoey Brouwer, Elllie Freebourn, Gisella Prencipe, Abigail Williams, Lyra Ingraham, Penelope Lockwood, Archer Bazarnic, Hayden Kim, Lila Parseghian, Olivia Storey, Abraham Dickson, Skylar Glover, Huxley Knight, Tobyn Rupprecht, Salma Lucas, Ella Zhang, Mila Silva.
