What happened to autumn? It seems like it's winter in the morning, summer in the afternoon. "Spring" comes sometime in between, as our Lost and Found clothing rack suggests. We're not sure why...SO MANY water bottles. Plus lunch boxes, notebooks, and the odd shoe.
Check our selection for familiar items.
Check your Panther(s) too - have they shed layers since leaving for school? Talk to them - that sometimes works - any help is appreciated!

Catalina Foothills High School's advanced theater program offers $1 tickets to 8th graders to see "Ten Chimneys," which combines the light wit of Noel Coward with the heavier themes of Anton Chekhov. It's set in 1938 on the Wisconsin estate of legendary stage couple Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne. The actors, who are preparing to star together in a production of Chekhov's "The Seagull," invite the play's cast, including comic actor Sydney Greenstreet, to rehearse and stay at their estate. When a young actress named Uta Hagen arrives to play Nina, Lunt is overjoyed - Fontanne not so much. As drama ensues and secrets are revealed, the actors' lives begin to mimic the plot of the production they're rehearsing for.
For details on times and prices, see the flyer below. Click the link to buy tickets.
8th Graders may attend for only $1.00!

We noticed that students had found a "worthy" challenge of their own - folding sticky notes into sharp, paper darts, then flinging them into ceiling tiles in classrooms.
So, we made it clear that making or possessing paper darts is not acceptable - but we wanted to acknowledge the genuine fun that students had in mastering this challenge - so we created a lunchtime challenge that allowed for a sanctioned, limited time when students could try their hand at this mischief.
Students folded and flew darts at two damaged, on-their-way-to-the-dumpster ceiling tiles. It's harder than it looks!

Snapshots of life and learning at OGMS |
There were not one, but two Lunchtime Challenges this week - paper-dart-throwing and cup stacking. (Last Friday's was postponed, Halloween being enough to handle). Students in Academic Advisory prepared for student-led conferences, a key component for continuing growth. Math students wrestled with writing equations for lines. Nicer weather is leading to more opportunities to head to the field after lunch and cleanup. |
All it takes to define a line is two points - but there are many ways to write the equation of that line. Students in Ms. Wilson's class learn a variety of techniques. One involves knowing the y intercept and the slope, or steepness, of the line.
|
Language teachers can make a lesson from just about anything: Games, clothing, the weather, current events. There's always something going on!
|
It's that time of year - students are preparing for student-led conferences, a cornerstone of the program at OGMS. Students must take the lead, playing up their strong areas, discussing what they can do better and setting smart goals - attainable and measureable. It builds a sense of ownership as students see their own growth as well as their persistent challenges - whether they be time management, preparedness for class, participation in lessons or how to grow those 3's - which indicate proficiency - into 3.5's or 4's, which indicate excellence.

Mr. Markstrom's students had some fun last Friday, building muscles while wearing costumes.
